What is a SEER rating?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the SEER rating the more energy efficient an air conditioner is. Many older systems have SEER ratings of 6 or less. The minimum SEER allowed today is 13. Look for the ENERGY STAR® label for central air conditioners with SEER ratings of 13 or greater, but consider using air conditioning equipment with higher SEER ratings for greater savings.
What is a AFUE rating?
AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the standard measurement of efficiency for gas fired furnaces. The higher the AFUE rating, the greater the efficiency. If you have an older furnace with an AFUE of approximately 60%, you could save up to 40% on your heating bills by replacing it with a new high efficiency furnace!
What is the phaseout of R-22?
R-22 is a refrigerant used in most air conditioning systems today. R-22 depletes the ozone layer, production and import was greatly reduced in 2010. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reduced the production of R-22 refrigerant for 2013. By 2015 there will be almost a complete ban on the production of R-22. Because of the decrease in production of R-22 the cost of servicing older R-22 equipment will continue to rise. If you have an R-22 system be sure to keep it properly maintained to prevent costly problems or consider upgrading to a new environmentally friendly 410-A system. To find out more information on the phaseout of R-22 visit the EPA website here.
How can I control energy costs?
Heating and cooling your home can represent as much as 44% of your utility bill. With high efficiency ratings and innovative, industry-leading technology, Lennox® home comfort systems can go a long way toward reducing these costs.
When selecting a new system, pay close attention to the SEER rating of the air conditioner and AFUE of the furnace. The higher the SEER or AFUE, the higher the savings.
Programmable Thermostats According to the Department of Energy, a programmable thermostat can reduce your heating costs by up to 35% and cooling costs by up to 25%.
Beyond efficiency ratings, other factors to consider are:
Maintenance You can ensure your system operates at peak performance by scheduling annual maintenance checks. Contact us about our PM plans.
